- people follow the crowd depending on the environment/situation, NOT on the individual
- strong group cohesion
- illusion of invulnerability of the group
- view others as weak, evil, or stupid – somehow we’re better
- any kind of perceived external threat (including recent failure)
- people will self-censor individual thoughts to maintain group identity
